Fall From Grace
Project type
Graphic Design
Date
2025
The "Fall Series" was created while enrolled in Design Technology and Concepts, a graphic design course, at the University of South Carolina.
The assigned prompt instructed students to choose any particular word, and to explore the different definitions via four graphic design panels. I chose the word "fall" and created a series that explored four metaphorical definitions of the word. This work featured various historical figures and fictional characters.
Created with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.
The "Fall Series" was displayed at the Founders Hall Gallery at the University of South Carolina Lancaster during a group exhibition that focused on student works from Design Technology and Concepts and Typographic Design I.

This work is Panel 4 of the "Fall Series," and the last panel.
For this panel, I chose to explore the downfall of Anakin Skywalker, a fictional character from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
This work is not officially affiliated with Star Wars. Any and all copyrighted material belongs to Lucasfilms and Disney.
Originally, I wanted to create a panel of Anakin standing over Mustafar, or of Anakin and Obi-Wan dueling against each other. However, the assignment prompt for Panel 4 required students to create a movie poster. I felt somewhat limited by this prompt.
Anakin Skywalker was both a victim of the old Jedi code, and a victim of his own arrogance and fear.
He was taught to repress his emotions by the Jedi, and was forbidden from having emotional attachments. However, he fell in love with Padme Amidala, and they married during Attack of the Clones.
Scarred from the trauma of the Clone Wars, Anakin was a hardened veteran by the events of Revenge of the Sith. He began to have visions of his wife, Padme, dying during childbirth. After losing his mother years before, he was afraid to lose his wife too.
He became obsessed with finding dark methods to keep her alive, and Senator Palpatine manipulated this obsession by promising him answers. He was later revealed to be Darth Sidious.
Sidious planted the seeds of distrust in Anakin against the Jedi, and began to teach him about the Dark Side of the Force.
As a consequence of the old Jedi teachings, Anakin repressed his emotions, which caused them to come out in unhealthy ways. However, Anakin was also arrogant. He wanted more than what he had earned, and being considered the Jedi’s "chosen one" got to his head.
Palpatine took advantage of that, and groomed him for a future position as his apprentice. He encouraged Anakin’s dark desires.
In the end, Anakin’s fear of losing Padme and his lust for power lead to his downfall. He became an apprentice to a Sith Lord, and sacrificed his own morals to unsuccessfully save Padme. She died of a broken heart.
In this piece, I chose to portray Anakin as a two-part silhouette. Part of him was Anakin Skywalker, and the other was Darth Vader. Though the same person, Anakin and Darth Vader were two parts of a whole. This is a reference to how Obi-Wan Kenobi spoke about Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader in A New Hope.
The background consists of red and orange patterns to reference Mustafar, the planet where Anakin and Obi-Wan dueled.
Because Anakin was considered the "chosen one" by the Jedi and prophesized to bring balance to the Force, I chose to portray his downfall as a "fall from grace."
He was a Jedi Knight who had betrayed those who trusted in him. He was also a pilot and a general who had served beside his fellow soldiers during the Clone Wars. He was powerful figure and and trusted by many.
Anakin Skywalker fell from grace due to own lust for power, and his fear of losing who he loved the most. However, it was both the Jedi and Darth Sidious who had contributed to his downfall.
